ISPO 2009: Ski mountaineering market is not in crisis: boots booming, carbon in trend (DE)
Nobody talked about crisis in ISPO, the Winter Sport trade fair in Munich. The growing ski mountaineering market and the great season with lots of snow and good weather pushed the sales of all manufacturer’s up.
The focus of all comments was the new boots showing up in the market. Since Pierre Gignoux invented and commercialized the XP500 carbon boot (570g, 1200€), all manufacturers began to research on light and reliable materials.
Scarpa presented already in Outdoor (July 2008) the new F1 Carbon, a mixture of plastic and carbon base on the very successful F1 and F1 Race. The weight of F1 Carbon costs 995€ and has a weight of 840g. The classic F1 race is 649€ and 1050g.
Dynafit presented officially the new race boot, with which they expect to attack again the race market. The new DyNA Carbon HM boot is a completely new concept, nothing to do with TLT4, with a revolutionary system of blocking (see image). The boot, with a weight of 920g, is already on sale for 1000€.
Another very expected boot is La Sportiva, The powerful shoes manufacturer cooperated with the carbon specialists Merelli to develop a 100% carbon boot. After seeing a prototype in Outdoor, the results is a very esthetic and light boot (490g + 148g inner boot = 638g). The unofficial price is nevertheless not so attractive: 1400€. Do you want to have one? Rather book now, since they plan only 500 pairs for 2009, reserved for top athletes and target people.
With Pierre Gignoux, Scarpa, Dynafit, Merelli… und ARA Components (a new carbon boot still in development made by the Spanish racer Agustí Roc in Andorra), the boots market is in a very interesting moment. Only Gignoux and Scarpa have consolidated boot, the rest has still to test the performances and efficiency on the races… we will follow the evolution.
Besides boots, other new equipment was as well presented in ISPO. Camp developed a new helmet (Speed, 210g), the lightest in the market. Will be on sale from February, price is not yet defined.
On skis, Dynafit presented the new DyNA ski, but other carbon skis are as well appreargin in the market. From overseas comes Goodge. The manufacturer from Salt Lake city produces the first ski 100% with carbon. The ski is winning the most part of the USA ski mountaineering races. 850g for 1100USD… really not bad coming from overseas! As well a small Swiss producer is producing carbon prototypes, but by now the market in Europe is still dominated by Merelli.
Skitrab presented as well the new Duo Piuma Race World Cup, 745g, almost the same ski than last year. The manufacturer from Bormio improved the edges, making the stronger. But the surprise on the brothers Trabbuchi is the introduction into the biding market. Skitrab is working on a binding project. According to the philosophy of Trab, nothing is finished and they talk only about a “development project”. The fact is that they have two very interesting prototypes: a “classical” copy of Dynafit (similar to ATK, Felizia, etc…) and a very innovative “randonée” binding. The new binding, made of alu and magnesium, is 560g weight and allows resugulation up to 140kg in the front and back part… some thing absolutely new in the “low tech” concept. The binding won’t be on sale before summer 2010, but will probably strongly hit the Fritschi Diamir market.
Tv news talk only about crisis and crisis.... but where is the crisis in Ski mountaineering? Fortunately our sport si still going up.
